One-of-a-Kind Artwork
About This Artwork
The Fairy Dunes is part of a diptych (a set of two artworks). It could be purchased separately but would look superb kept as a diptych, with both artworks hanging side by side. The scenes differ, but the subject, dimensions, and techniques used for both artworks are the same.
It's hard to resist photographing and painting Australia's tiny fairy wrens, which flit around in the wild scrublands behind the sand dunes. It makes perfect sense to include them in the Wild Coast series, which highlights the need to protect the disappearing coastal habitats that support Australia's unique and beautiful wildlife.
This piece uses a recycled wooden panel as its substrate, which is layered with hot and cold wax, hardeners, and pigments, which are burned in and then scraped and carved to create form, texture and depth. The velvety finish, which is highly tactile, resembles unglazed porcelain.
